*The Senator's Choice*
The Eastern White Pine makes an ideal Christmas Tree because they hold their needles well, even long after being harvested. They are also well suited for people with allergies. The White Pine is fun to decorate at Christmas with their soft, flowing green needles.
This tree is native to the northeast. If you have ever cut a tree from Northern Michigan, New York, Vermont or Maine, then you may well have selected a white pine for your family tree.
The White Pine is available as:
"Cut-Your-Own" - Up to 15 ft.
Live "Ball & Burlap" - Up to 8 ft.
The Canaan Fir (pronounced ka-nane) is one of the best of the "Choose & Cut" Christmas Trees and has been the most popular selection for several years. The Canaan Fir is considered to be one of the best choices for freshness and needle retention, easily lasting from Thanksgiving through New Years.
The needles are short, soft, and rounded with a dark green topside and a silver accent underneath. The Canaan is a slightly tapered, but full tree. The branches are thick and sturdy, but still leave enough room to hang ornaments and lights closer to the center of the tree.
The Canaan Fir is available as:
"Cut-Your-Own" - Up to 8 ft.
Dirr Nurseries is one of the only growers of Balsam Fir in Cincinnati
The scent of the Balsam Fir is considered by many to be the “smell of Christmas”. As with all members of the Fir tree family, the Balsam Fir is a very fragrant tree. But the actual aroma of this tree is what makes it unique. When you walk into a room with a fresh cut Balsam Fir, you immediately think Christmas.
In addition to its great fragrance, the Balsam Fir is a very attractive tree. With a slightly tapered shape, the tree is full and has strong branches. The needles are medium length, and very soft. This makes the Balsam Fir a very easy tree to decorate! The Balsam Fir offers very good needle retention and makes a great Christmas tree.
The Balsam Fir is available as:
"Cut-Your-Own" - Up to 8 ft.
A traditional favorite. At some point, most of us have had a Scotch Pine in our home as our Christmas tree of choice. With a sturdy frame and full branches, this tree is great even when completely covered with ornaments and lights.
The Scotch Pine has 2 to 3 inch long stiff needles with 2 needles to a cluster. It holds needles better than most trees. The strong branches are ideal for hanging heavy ornaments. It has only a slight fragrance.
Not native to North America, the Scotch Pine is an import from Europe. It has been grown and used as a Christmas tree in the U.S. since the 1940's.
The Scotch Pine is available as:
"Cut-Your-Own" - Up to 7 ft.
Did You Know*
The Norway Spruce, native to The Black Forest in Germany is a popular Christmas tree due to it's color, the branch strength, and symmetrical shape. Legend has it that Martin Luther, in Germany, was inspired by this tree to decorate it and use its evergreen qualities as a symbol for Christmas. It is believed to be the first actual Christmas tree.
The Norway Spruce has short needles, which are less than one inch in length. These needles are stiff and pointed and sharp to the touch. The color is a glossy dark green. Many people select spruce for the strength of its branches, as they comfortably support heavy ornaments.
The Norway Spruce is available as:
"Cut-Your-Own" - Up to 7 ft.
Live "Ball & Burlap" - 5 to 7 ft.
Choosing and planting a live tree on your landscape after the holidays is a pleasant way to savor the memory of the family excursion to Dirr Nurseries Christmas Tree Farm. We offer live White Pine and Norway Spruce Christmas trees suitable for planting.
- Consider the weight of the root ball to ensure it is manageable to plant after the holiday. Keep in mind the root ball adds one foot height to the tree, plus additional weight. A 5-foot dug tree will weigh about 100 pounds, a 6-foot tree weighs about 150 pounds, and a 7-foot tree will weigh about 200 pounds.
- Price per foot for a live ball & burlap tree will run approximately $14 per foot (measured above ground).
- Limit the amount of time the tree is kept inside to not more than 7 to 10 days, as the warmer temperatures cause the tree to lose its cold-hardiness. After the 7 to 10 day period, plant the tree outside as soon as possible.
- While the tree is inside the house, water it daily until it is planted.
Our experience indicates if the tree is handled in above manner the survival rate is close to 100%.
